Cortisol: the Stress Hormone’s Effect on Your Health and Weight Loss

Stress is simply a part of life. Stress can be a positive thing: It can save your life in a fight or flight situation, or it can be the kick in the butt you need to finally finish that project at work you’ve been putting off. Too much stress, however, can have a negative effect on your mental and physical health. In today’s society, where we are moving faster, taking on more responsibility and are constantly technologically connected to the demands of work and home, our lives are becoming more overwhelming, and it may be taking a toll on our waistlines.

Cortisol, dubbed the “stress hormone”, is an important hormone secreted by the adrenal glands, responsible for many functions in the body including regulating metabolism and blood pressure, immune function, inflammatory response, and releasing insulin, which maintains blood sugar levels.

Cortisol isn’t only secreted when the body is under stress, but it is secreted in higher levels during the body’s “fight or flight” response to stress (think of when something pops out and scares the crap out of you. That surge you get is your body’s fight or flight response- you either jump and run, or start swinging.) The stress we encounter on a daily basis isn’t always so obvious or sudden, but daily stress, i.e. a jam packed schedule the next day or not knowing how you are going to afford next month’s bills, isn’t immediately remedied, so your stress levels stay elevated for an extended period of time until the stressor is remedied, or more often than not, until another stressor comes along and takes over.

Just as with everything in life, too much of something is never a good thing. Elevated cortisol levels cause many physical, negative changes to the body, including impaired cognitive function, blood sugar imbalances, high blood pressure, and lower immunity, causing you to feel slow and drained of energy, or even come down with an illness.

This is why when you are stressed, you may experience redness in your face, neck and ears due to higher blood pressure, increased appetite due to out of whack blood sugar levels and just generally sluggish and irritable.

Perhaps the most frustrating side effect of elevated cortisol levels, however, is weight gain. Physically, your appetite may increase causing you to overeat, which is often referred to as stress eating or emotional eating, but of course, if you don’t eat the calories, then you won’t gain the weight- simple solution. The deeper culprit to weight gain is that cortisol can decrease your muscle tissue, which will slow your metabolism, causing you to burn less calories in a day and an increase in belly fat, which not only isn’t attractive, it carries a host of health risks all its own.

Increased abdominal fat is more dangerous to your health than fat deposits in other areas of your body. Excess belly fat puts you at risk for heart attack, stroke, high cholesterol and metabolic syndrome.

Lower Your Stress Levels with a Healthy Lifestyle

Most of your stressors can’t simply be eliminated by delegating out your responsibilities or avoiding the situation completely, so finding ways to cope with your stress is the most practical way to keep your cortisol levels down. Fortunately, the best ways to reduce stress are also good for your health.

Stress Less, Weigh Less

Stress Less, Weigh Less is a book written by Holly Mosier. This book allows you to follow Mosier and receive an increase in energy and an ageless body all while eating the foods that you love. This book is focused on a new approach of primarily reducing your stress. Mosier offers her expertise as the owner of a boxing gym and a yoga teacher to this weight loss program. Included are exercise and nutrition guidelines that have been tested and proven to work. This book will teach you how to use your mind and body connection to achieve results.

The food included in this book is delicious and the workouts are easy to implement. The program is one that you will implement over 30 days to change your habits and get you going on the right track. Stress Less, Weigh Less is broken into four different parts including stress to weigh less, revamp the way you’re eating, revamp the way you’re exercising and follow Holly. Each section offers several chapters to guide you through the program. If you stress easily or suspect that stress causes you to eat emotionally and want to lose weight, this program might work for you.

Deals with stress as a factor in weight lossIncludes quick and easy meals and recipesEncourages working out Program changes your habits to healthy ones in just one monthAddresses lack of activity and other causes of obesityWeight loss plan is result of author’s research and resultsFocuses on the part that the mind plays weight loss

One of the first steps to your nutrition with Stress Less, Weigh Less is to determine how much you should eat. This part of the book along with all others is based on the research of the author and is meant to make the program easy to follow. The food chapters of the book discuss how to achieve your weight loss and maintain it. Another thing you must do is choose your happy weight. Then you can learn the correct daily calorie amount you need to eat to reach your happy weight. This program does go along with the logic that you must burn more calories than you consume in order to lose weight. There is a chart included in the book to guide you to how many calories should be consumed each day depending on your current weight and activity level. You are encouraged to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and one snack each day. You are also encouraged to balance your meals with the right amount of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Mosier offers guidance based on what she has had success with. There is another chart that calls out common foods and if they fall under the protein, fat or carbohydrate category.

Choosing foods that have a lower glycemic index is also encouraged. Mosier takes the time to explain how protein, fat and carbohydrates affect your level of hunger so that you can balance things out to avoid spikes in hunger and blood sugar levels. While on the program you should weigh yourself at least once per week and keep a daily food journal. Many people fall victim to guessing inaccurately on their portion sizes. To avoid this you should measure things out. Some of the other tips included that focus on the diet portion of this book are drink plenty of water, try to have a late-afternoon snack, don’t skip meals to speed weight loss, have a beverage with meals and schedule one pig-out meal per week. Below is a sample menu for a day on the Stress Less, Weigh Less eating plan:

Breakfast: Holly’s Cheese Blintzes; coffeeLunch: Holly’s Turkey and Cheese Pita; carrot sticks; hot teaSnack: AppleDinner: Holly’s Cinnamon Salmon; Holly’s Roasted Veggies; Holly’s Salad; Crystal Light lemonade

In Stress Less, Weigh Less Mosier focuses on making your workouts more efficient for results rather than telling you to exercise longer. There are a few chapters that focus on yoga and utilizing yoga poses for stress relief. You can incorporate these yoga workouts with your other workouts. You don’t have to spend hours at the gym to be effective. There are several guidelines to follow in order to be effective with exercise. Mosier admits that she looks for every opportunity to move and does little things like parking far from the door at the supermarket and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. These are the things you can do in addition to your workout each day. To get lasting results you are going to have to put in the work and exercise. Below are some of the guidelines to follow where exercise is concerned:

Exercise everyday for 45 to 60 minutesVary your activities and workoutsDo both cardio exercise and resistance trainingAim to burn at least 250 to 350 calories each day with exerciseUse a heart rate monitor for the most efficient exerciseUse interval trainingDo not over trainHave a cup of coffee to boost your workoutsCalendar your daily workouts

Mosier includes some workout routines for you to follow if you need them. You can always choose your own workouts if you have something fun that you enjoy doing. She also has some recommendations for exercise classes that may be available at your local gym. If you prefer working out at home, there are instructions for completing a home boxing workout.

Stress Less, Weigh Less offers a plan that will work. If you follow the recommendations of reducing your calorie intake, eating meals regularly and exercise as advised, you will see results. Stress Less, Weigh Less takes the work out of figuring things out and gets you started on the road to weight loss. This book lets you know that you will have to put in the work to be successful. Following this program can lead to lasting results and help you reach your happy weight and stay there.

Avoid Packing on the New Relationship Pounds

Dating – either as a single person or half of a committed couple – can make for a very exciting time. When you think of going on a date, most often you might envision dinner, maybe a movie, or coffee and dessert.

New relationships always seem to pack on the pounds. Many experts say it is because once you are comfortable, happy and secure in a relationship, you are not as diligent about your physical appearance. While in the beginning it is a nice feeling to be able to relax in a new and exciting relationship, a few months in, you may look in the mirror and wonder where all your hard work went.

Especially in the summer, dating can often involve activities and foods to keep your temperature down, but summer time dating doesn’t have to be a body buster. Instead of curling up with your cutie in a dark room, some ice cream and watching TV, here are some terrific summer date activities that will help you keep your cool, but won’t leave you running for a mu-mu to cover up your not quite ready for close up body.

Beach fun – Instead of taking your date to the beach with a towel and the idea of lying out, why not plan an active afternoon? Running on the beach is a phenomenal workout, especially for the calves. Frisbee games will get your blood pumping, and everyone loves beach volleyball.

Frozen treats – It’s hot outside, it’s muggy and gross and everyone wants to cool off, so you stop for ice cream. Bad move. High in sugar and fat, ice cream is the epitome of the saying, “a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips”. Instead, scope out your city for a frozen yogurt stand. It’s cool and refreshing and won’t undo the results of your beach workout.

Rock climbing – Sometimes, it’s just too hot and muggy to be outside. Keep your date active by finding a rock gym in your area. Air conditioning keeps the body cool, and the reality of the trust you need to have in your climbing partner can help you grow in your relationship.

Alcohol intake – Hot day, cold beer. Hot day, cold mixed drink. Hot day, too tight shorts. Alcohol is high in calories and can be the silent sabotage that you don’t notice. If you are out on a date, enjoy your evening with a wine spritzer, light beer or non alcoholic cocktail.

Picnics and Potlucks – There’s not a week that goes by during the summer months that we aren’t invited to a picnic, potluck or barbecue. Many of the traditional foods offered at these functions – potato salad, hot dogs, chips – can be the worst choices. Bring your own foods to toss on the grill - pork tenderloin is a terrific low fat option. Fruit kabobs and a veggie platter are delicious healthy choices that will help keep you on track.

Dining out - For better or worse, dining out is synonymous with dating. In fact, every time I ask my husband if he wants to go out, his response is always, “Where will we eat?” If you are visiting a restaurant with a date, scope out the menu for a lower fat option – many restaurants have a key on the bottom with a symbol to indicate a healthier choice. One other good option is to split a higher fat meal, or to enjoy soup and salad.

With just a few tweaks, dating doesn’t have to equal grabbing your fat pants and settling in. Dating can be good for your body!

Elliptical vs. Treadmill Workouts: Which is Right for You?

Whenever I ask people what their favorite way to get cardio in is, they usually mention two pieces of equipment: the elliptical and the treadmill. This is great because both offer a fantastic cardiovascular workout and work well for people of all kinds of fitness backgrounds. But how do these two pieces compare in regards to cost, ease of use and accessibility? Read on to see how ellipticals and treadmills  compare and how they differ- and find the piece of equipment that is perfect for you!

Cost

While both ellipticals and treadmills vary greatly in price and quality, when looking at cardio pieces that are appropriate for home use, ellipticals are typically a little bit less costly than treadmills. You have to be a savvy shopper, but know that your dollar is going to go a bit farther when buying an elliptical. While there are quite a few ellipticals on the market that are less than $1,000 and are OK for general home use, I can’t really say that about treadmills. This is because when you look at the basic machinery of the two types of equipment, a treadmill is just a little bit more complicated than an elliptical. When shopping and looking at price, also take into consideration that both pieces may need repairs under regular use, with treadmill belts usually needing a bit more love and repair than an ellitpical. Both pieces should come with warranties.

Who wins this one? The elliptical is a more cost-effective option.

Ease of Use

Nowadays, cardio equipment pieces like ellipticals and treadmills are super easy to use. Most feature a big green “Quick Start” button that you can push and get to working out, changing your speed and incline or resistance. So both are pretty easy to use. However, when it comes to the actual movement, walking and running is something we were born to do, while being on the elliptical is a little less natural and takes some getting used to (although it is fairly ergonomic).

Who wins this one? The treadmill is easier to use for the average person.

Fitness Level

No matter what your fitness level is, you can get a great workout on both pieces of equipment by increasing your intensity through speed, resistance and/or incline. Interval workouts are particularly good on ellipticals and treadmills!

Who wins this one? It depends! For beginners, walking on the treadmill is a great choice. For advanced exercisers, the treadmill allows you to work harder because you can adjust both the speed and the incline together. And for intermediate exerciser? The elliptical is a great way to do something that is more challenging than a walk yet not quite as hard as a jog, and the treadmill is great to do a walk-run workout on!

Special Considerations

If you have a limited range of motion, a disability, are recovering from an injury or just generally have stiff joints, it’s very important to choose a piece of cardio equipment that gets your heart rate up without causing you physical pain (remember, soreness is different than pain). For most people with injuries, the elliptical and walking on the treadmill are both low-impact options that are appropriate for most beginner exercises. (Always contact your doc first though!)

Who wins this one? When it comes to injuries and limited mobility, the elliptical has the slight edge because, although both offer low-impact and weight-bearing exercise, there is a lower risk of injury. The ergonomic motion on an elliptical is already set, so it’s pretty much impossible to do it incorrectly.

The bottomline is that — on the whole — neither the elliptical or the treadmill is better. It really depends on your goals, your needs and what you like. If you hate getting on the elliptical, then it’s probably not the pick for you even if it is a little cheaper.

I tend to like treadmills a little bit more because I like the ability to either walk or jog, but what about you? Which do you prefer more: the elliptical or the treadmill?

Obesity Vaccine May Be on the Horizon

Has it really come to this? Well, maybe it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise since obesity is often referred to as a disease.

Just as kids get vaccines that have made things like polio and smallpox obsolete, there may come a day when adults who are struggling with their weight can be vaccinated to suppress their appetite.

A new study involving mice successfully got the obese subjects to eat 50 percent less after they were given the vaccine, which was ghrelin (the hormone that stimulates hunger) attached to harmless virus-like particles.

The theory behind injecting ghrelin is that the body develops antibodies against the hormone, which would suppress the hunger-inducing substance.

The effects of the vaccine lasted for 18 months, which is equal to four years for humans.

While these studies were successful, the idea has its doubters. The objections aren’t that the study was conducted in a shady or unscientific manner, it’s mainly to caution the public due to the complexities involved in regulating our weight.

“I think that an obesity vaccine is pretty far-fetched,” said Dr. Pieter Cohen, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a general internist at Cambridge Health Alliance. “It’s extremely unlikely we’ll be able to develop a vaccine that will prevent weight gain.”

One of the complexities to weight gain is that there are other factors for why we overeat other than our appetite. For instance, many people get caught up in emotional eating that has nothing to do with feeling hungry.

The study’s authors, including Dr. Mariana Monteiro of the University of Porto in Portugal, would like to see a successful vaccine, if for no other reason than to provide a safer alternative to current weight loss drugs, which sometimes have deadly side effects.

Inca Peanuts Touted as Best Snack for Weight Loss

Mary Hartley, RD, MPH, is the director of nutrition for Calorie Count, providing domain expertise on issues related to nutrition, weight loss and health. She creates original content for weekly blogs and newsletters, for the Calorie Count library, and for her popular daily Question-and-Answer section, Ask Mary. Ms. Hartley also furnishes direction for the site features and for product development.

Not only did Dr. Oz inherit Oprah’s timeslot, he also snagged “The Oprah Effect,” (When Oprah endorses a product, business explodes.) Case in point: Inca Peanuts. Had you heard of them before?

Here’s what Dr. Oz wants you to know.

“Inca Peanuts are the best snack for weight loss,” according to Dr. Oz. That’s because they control your appetite. They don’t suppress it like diet pills. Inca Peanuts are loaded with protein, fiber and fat, three nutrients that promote satiety. Inca Peanuts take the edge off hunger.

The protein in Inca Peanuts has all the essential amino acids, just like in animal foods. And the protein is highly digestible, as plant proteins go. Inca Peanuts are high in fiber with 6 grams of fiber per ounce. As a point of reference, one ounce of regular peanuts has only 2.4 grams of fiber.

Compared to other plants, Inca Peanuts have a better blend of fatty acids. They have the highest concentration of the essential fatty acids, Omega-3s, Omega-6s and Omega-9s. Omega-3, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), is the raw material the body uses to make DHA and EPA, the omega oils in fish. In addition, Inca Peanuts have less saturated fat than any fish and they are never contaminated like farm raised fish or fish that collect mercury. The Inca Peanut fat also carries vitamins A and C, natural anti-oxidants.

The original name of Inca Peanuts is Sacha Inchic, an aboriginal term meaning “mountain or wild peanut.” The peanuts are actually the seeds of a green, star-shaped fruit that grows on a vine in the warm, moist climate of the low and high Amazon jungles of Peru. When you buy Inca Peanuts, you help indigenous people of the Amazon preserve their way of life. Oxam America and other non-profits promote cultivation as a cash crop and a way to reverse deforestation. Besides seeds, Sacha Inchic is grown to provide powdered protein for the food and supplement industries and oil for use in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Inca Peanuts taste best when they are roasted and salted. When raw, they have a bitter taste like cocoa and the hardness of a seed. They are expensive because they are imported and new to the market. You can order Inca Peanuts online or try TerrAmazon brand Sachi Inchi Roasted Seeds at Whole Foods Market. Dr. Oz recommends one ounce a day – around 180 calories.

5 Balanced Dinner Menus to Fill Your MyPlate Icon

With the recent announcement that the food pyramid will be replaced by the new MyPlate icon, Americans are more aware than ever that it’s time to start eating their vegetables.

While the plate icon offers a visual, user-friendly guide to help people make better food choices, some of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines, like eating more fish, beans and whole grains, are not addressed.

Before you start cooking dinners based on MyPlate, keep the size of your plate in mind and check your portion sizes. According to the Mayo Clinic, reasonable portion sizes include:

One serving of protein should be three to six ounces (three for women, six for men) and about the size of a deck of playing cards. One serving of whole grains should be the equivalent of one slice of bread, 1/3 cup brown rice or 1/2 cup whole-wheat pasta. One serving of dairy is equivalent to an 8 ounce glass of milk or 1 ounce cheese (about the size of four dice). One serving of fruit and vegetables should be approximately 1/2 cup cooked or 1 cup raw.

To help make dinnertime easier, we’ve compiled five easy dinner menus featuring a protein, a vegetable and a whole grain option on your plate.

What Your Nails and Skin Say About Your Diet

Whether you’re male or female, healthy nails and hands are typically seen as signs of physical beauty. According to Dr. Ariel Ostad, a Manhattan Board Certified Dermatologist, changes in skin and nails can signify health problems, some of which can be helped or prevented by eating a healthy diet.

“Skin and nail changes should be given the same level of attention and scrutiny as other physical symptoms men and women experience within their body,” said Ostad. “All too often, we only see a doctor for symptoms we can feel such as stomach or back pain. Visible changes to nails and skin can be indicative of conditions such as skin cancer or other systemic issues.”

While a perfectly manicured hand is one where the nails are strong and smooth, with no discoloration or jagged cuticle, most people have less-than-perfect hands. While regular visits to the dermatologist, proper moisturizing and protecting your skin from UV rays are all good practice, what you eat can also help prevent the issues that cause skin damage – and help improve damage that has already been done.

Look at your skin and nails for cues that it’s time to change up your diet. If you suspect there is an underlying issue, be sure to see your doctor or health care professional.

Spoon-Shaped Nails. A healthy nail has a specific shape—slightly raised in the middle, then curving down a bit at the tip. “Flat, spoon-shaped nails are a sign of iron deficiency anemia,” said Ostad.  “As with many health problems, it can take months of iron deficiency before the problem shows up in the nails. And when the anemia is corrected, it will take awhile for normal-shaped nails to re-grow.” In the meantime, add plenty of iron-rich foods to your diet.  Dark leafy greens, legumes and fresh or canned pumpkin are all great options. Try: Pumpkin Walnut Snack Muffins.

Peeling, Dry Nails and Skin. The nail is made up of several layers of keratin (a protein). Ideally, those layers seal together to form a unified, strong nail. But when nails aren’t protected—your hands are in water a lot, or exposed to cold, dry air—those layers tend to deteriorate, resulting in peeling nails. “Besides being an indication that you need to take better care of your nails, peeling nails can mean a diet that’s lacking in linoleic acid,” said Ostad. “The easiest way to up your intake is to increase your use of vegetable oils.” Opt for plenty of healthy olive oil, rich in monounsaturated fats. Try: Italian Salad Dressing or Tunisian Spiced California Raisin Hummus.

Brittle Nails According to Dr. Ostad, experts estimate that 20 percent of women suffer from a condition called “brittle nail syndrome.” Brittle nails can’t hold onto moisture, so the layers of the nail plate dry out and crack. Nutritionally, a diet low in iron can cause nails to become thin, brittle and easily broken. Ostad recommends increasing your vitamin B and iron intake, starting with dark leafy green vegetables and eggs, beef or seafood. Try: Cottage Scrambled Eggs or Kale Chips.

We Love CLICK All-Natural Espresso Protein Drink

Confession: I am a coffee drinker. I can manage a french press myself. I drink it black. Despite a Starbucks in my family tree, I don’t find the coffee sold at that chain store up to my standards. I was skeptical about trying CLICK Espresso Protein Drink.

According to press releases, “CLICK is the brainchild of Greg and Beth Smith, a Fresno, California couple who owned a small chain of women’s fitness centers. The Smiths were seeking a delicious, healthy beverage for their members in response to the growing wall of sugar based energy and espresso drinks on the market.” The 15 grams of protein per serving is designed to provide sustained energy, in addition to the “two shots of espresso” or 100-150mg of caffeine per serving.

The sample of CLICK sent to me came with it’s own special mixing cup. While it is one more thing to add to my cabinets, it did make mixing a powdered drink very simple. CLICK can be served hot or cold, and their website has several recipes to try in addition to the easy mix. It is hot, even for June, in Indianapolis, so I only tried it over ice. It took about three drinks before I got used to and liked the Vanilla Latte flavor. However, I was surprised that I immediately liked the Mocha flavor. I am much more likely to choose a mocha over a vanilla latte in coffee drinks as well, though.

My friend who only drinks very sweet, milky coffee did not like the taste of either flavor. I am not sure if the added protein provided a more sustained energy for me, but it certainly kept me from getting hungry even when meetings ran into the lunch hour. Overall, though, I found the amount of energy provided, whether by caffeine or protein, was sufficient but not as much as I would have liked.

The new formula of All-Natural CLICK was designed to reach individuals who only buy natural products, however, the Don’t Eat That iPhone app was not a fan of many of the ingredients listed. The ingredients in All-Natural CLICK may not be genetically modified, but we do not know that from reading the nutritional information. Can the makers of All-Natural CLICK tell us how each ingredient is derived and from where? Simply the length of the ingredients list would have turned me away if I had picked it up in a store.

I liked All-Natural CLICK more than I thought that I would. An espresso protein is something that might appeal to me if I was less concerned about the individual ingredients that I ingest. I will stick with grinding and brewing my own coffee and eating protein for breakfast. If more information could be provided or the ingredients list could be simplified, perhaps I would try CLICK again.

Although CLICK provided Brooke with a sample to review, the review remains her own opinion and has been influenced in no way.

10 All-Natural Beauty Treatments

By MyDailyMoment.com Editorial Team

Pretty is as pretty does. And while it might seem like it’s clothes and cosmetics that make the woman, the reality is all-natural beauty boosters are actually found in the place you’d least expect it. We’re talking about your food.

Shiny hair, glowing skin and bright eyes are all the by-products of healthy habits like proper diet and physical activity.

While the right wardrobe and makeup can go a long way in making you look attractive and feel confident, there are natural beauty boosters that can do the same and have a positive impact on your health, too.

When it comes to reviving your appearance, it’s “super foods” to the rescue. You may be a skeptic, but many fruits and vegetables actually contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that can work from the inside out to enhance your beauty. Consider them a food fountain of youth.

Below you’ll find a few tips about natural beauty boosters that can be found in common foods:

Load Up On Antioxidants: Foods high in antioxidants and vitamins can help slow the aging process by protecting the body against free radicals. Antioxidant rich foods include broccoli, tomatoes, garlic, red grapes, berries, spinach and tea.

Get Your Daily Dose of Vitamins and Minerals: For great hair, eat foods that have Omega 3s, vitamin B12 and plenty of protein. Try eggs, olive oil, nuts and fish.

Water, Water, Water: Drink plenty of water. A well-hydrated body tends to work more efficiently, flush away toxins, and maintain the energy needed for intense workouts. Water keeps skin from getting dehydrated so you’ll stay moist and smooth. With all these benefits, consuming plenty of water may be the best thing you can do for your health and your appearance.

Exfoliate: Make your own exfoliants. Combine a coarse product (sugar, salt, ground-up seeds) with a smooth base (such as honey, yogurt or avocado) to slough off dead skin and reveal a glowing, fresh face. Exfoliating products can be purchased at stores or made at home from everyday kitchen products. Try scrubs that contain corn or rice powder if you have oily skin and richer formulations that contain avocado or olive oil if your skin is dry.

Supercharge with Supplements: Taking a daily multivitamin can also ensure you get enough nutrients on a daily basis. It’s best to get nutrients from their natural sources, but a multivitamin can be a great supplement to your diet, particularly for when you’re eating on the go.

Mask the Flaws: Facial masks are created from a variety of ingredients and left on your face for about 15 minutes before being rinsed away with warm water. Some women prefer to make their own facial masks, but you can shop around in health food stores for facial masks that contain plenty of natural ingredients. Among the make-at-home favorites: egg whites (made by “painting” on the white of 1 egg) or oatmeal mixed with plain yogurt (try 1/2 cup of oatmeal ground to a fine powder and mixed with 1/4 cup yogurt).

Dry Ideas: Facial and body moisturizers are very important when it comes to achieving that heavenly glow that results from healthy skin. There are so many moisturizers on the market that claim to work wrinkle-zapping magic, but the best way to maintain a youthful appearance is be mindful about what you feed your skin. There’s a variety of simple natural moisturizing lotions, gels and creams available at health food stores and large retailers. Read labels and try to avoid products that contain excessive chemicals and artificial fragrances.

Zap Those Zits: If acne is an issue, some natural products can be applied topically to help you recover the blemish-free face you desire. Some essential oils, like lavender, tea tree and jojoba, have been shown to have a beneficial effect on blemish-prone skin. Apple cider vinegar and lemon juice have natural astringent and anti-bacterial properties.

When it comes to appearance it’s always important to remember, the better you look, the better you feel. Reducing stress, staying fit and spending time with friends will improve looks ten-fold, better than any make-up, or chemical-laden lotions and potions ever could. Listed below are a few natural beauty boosters that promote both physical and mental well-being:

Let’s get physical – and Stay That Way: Exercising not only keeps us trim and limber, but it also improves our circulation and the functioning of all our organs. Whole-person disciplines like yoga and Tai Chi are particularly effective for these purposes, but a jog around the neighborhood will get the heart pumping and bring a blush to your cheeks just the same.

We All Need the Human Touch. Physical interaction is an important part of life as well. Our bodies crave it and reward us for it by producing feel-good hormones that can help us look great too. This is one reason why women who are having great sex tend to glow naturally. Getting a massage can also help you look your best for some of the same reasons. It helps loosen the built-up muscle tension that leads to poor posture and the appearance of fatigue.

Relax, Don’t Do It. Another scientifically proven stress-buster is meditation. While you may not see yourself as the type of person who can sit for hours at a time chanting “OM,” you might benefit from giving it a try for several minutes a day. There are web sites and DVDs geared for beginners that are very simple to follow. Being at peace with yourself will show on your face. It will also manifest in the way you treat yourself and others. When you love yourself, you will look better, be more positive and draw others to you.

You’re Hot and you’re Cold: Treatments like hot stone therapy, cold mud therapy and saunas are great, natural ways to release tension and invigorate both your skin and your mental state.

Four Ways to Stay Cool During Record-Breaking Heat

With this week’s record breaking heat, which has been blamed for five deaths in Tennessee, Maryland and Wisconsin, some experts predict an unusually hot summer for the United States.

According to MSNBC.com,  a new study from Stanford University predicts that global climate change will lead permanently to unusually hot summers by the middle of the century. So, as the summers heat up, what can you do to stay cool and keep hydrated?

Lather Up: With excessive heat often comes excessive sunshine and no matter how much time you plan to spend outside, sun safety is critical for preventing skin cancer. Use sunscreen with an SPF30 or higher daily for protection and if you’re planning on spending the day outdoors, up the ante to an SPF45 or higher.

Hit the Pool: Instead of abandoning your workout in favor of languishing in the air-conditioning, move your workout underwater. Swimming is an effective total body workout and when you’re underwater you won’t feel the effects of the heat. remember, when you’re in the pool, you can still fall victim to the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Stay Hydrated. Excessive heat can make you feel tired, lethargic and dizzy – all symptoms of dehydration. To avoid feeling run-down as the weather heats up, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Carry a water bottle with you throughout the day so that you’re constantly replenishing and aim to drink a glass of water before every meal to stay ahead of the hot weather.

Water, water, everywhere. As tempting as it is to reach for a cold glass of lemonade – or a frozen margarita – as the temperatures rise, plain old H20 is the best thing to keep you hydrated when the sun is at its hottest. Don’t wait until you get thirsty to start sipping: drinking water is the most important thing you can do to stay hydrated.

Lipozene Diet Pills

Lipozene Diet Pills

There are many diet pills available on the market today and it’s no wonder why many people are left confused about which option is best for them. While diet pills receive plenty of negative criticism, the bottom line is this … millions of Americans use them and they can be an effective supplement for weight loss if used correctly. Many people turn to over-the-counter diet pills as opposed to anti-obesity drugs because of the possibility of severe and even life-threatening side effects. Stimulants in general carry a risk of high blood pressure, faster heart rate, palpitations, restlessness, agitation and insomnia.

One of the recent over-the-counter products to hit the shelf is Alli. In short, Alli serves to block some of the fat you consume. Downside to this product is the necessity to eat a low-fat diet, as too much fat will cause some very undesirable effects (i.e. oily stool with a possibility of leakage). Side effects, such as diarrhea and gas with oily spotting, can be significant if you don’t reduce the fat in your diet. In addition, it’s a fairly expensive product and requires some serious commitment. It is intended to be used only with a reduced calorie, low-fat diet and regular exercise. On a positive note, Alli will not cause any kind of jittery effects or sleeplessness.

The FDA recently released a consumer advisory about certain Hydroxycut-branded products. According to the advisory, the FDA has received 23 reports over more than seven years about consumers having experienced serious liver-related problems from taking Hydroxycut. The full advisory can be read at hydroxycutinformation.com. This recall drives home the importance of understanding the ingredients in supplements prior to ingesting them. Ensure the diet pill you select is 100% natural with no side effects.

Lipozene has been on the market for quite some time. The product is indeed 100% natural – made from Glucomannan fiber – is inexpensive and the company guarantees weight loss during its 30-day risk-free trial offer. According to Wikipedia, clinical evidence suggests Glucomannan may be beneficial in weight loss. Because it is a soluble fiber, it absorbs water to form a viscous gel-like mass. This mass may promote feelings of satiety while traveling through the gastrointestinal tract. More information can be found at lipozene.com.

The 3 Most Important Habits to Break if You Want to Lose Weight

Rebecca Wilson practices cognitive & mindfulness-based therapies and researches health psychology and behavior change. Her website, habitspark.com, focuses on how to use positive habits to create healthy and happy lifestyles.

First of all, what exactly is a habit? A habit is a behavior that you do so regularly that it becomes almost automatic. Although many habits are good, like brushing your teeth, some habits are devastating to a healthy lifestyle and weight control. Here are the 3 worst habits and how to break them:

Bad Habit #1: Eating mindlessly. Eating on the run, eating without paying attention to your hunger signals, and eating to escape painful feelings.

Break It: Replace eating mindlessly with eating mindfully. Eat at a dining table and make sure you aren’t doing anything else while you are eating. Before you start eating, notice your hunger level. As you eat, pay attention to your senses: the taste of the food, the feel of it, the smell, and how it looks.

Regularly check in with your hunger levels. Stop eating when you are no longer hungry, but before you are full. If you eat emotionally, notice what leads up to it and plan other ways of coping, such as talking to a friend or going for a walk. Breathe and let yourself experience the negative feelings and realize that you’re okay.

Bad Habit #2: Laying, sitting, & vegging out. Only 30% of us exercise regularly. Work is increasingly sedentary, and favorite past times now include watching TV and using the computer. This adds up to a ton of inactive time every day. Physical activity is critical for many reasons: it protects against depression, relieves stress, increases focus, improves sleep, and increases energy.

Break It: Set a small goal for yourself such as 15 minutes of movement every morning. This will create momentum, and you can do more when you feel like it. Brainstorm ways to put more activity into your day. Wear a pedometer, take the stairs, park further, commute by bike, go on a walk with friends at lunch, play ball with your kids, take up active hobbies like gardening, dancing, adult sports leagues, etc. When you think that you don’t have the energy, remind yourself that having low energy is actually a sign that you need to be more active. Make it a habit to always get started no matter how you feel.

Bad Habit #3: Sacrificing sleep. Sleep is a crucial foundation for dealing effectively with life. We average 6 hours a night, when most adults need 8-9 hours. Lack of sleep can contribute to stress, increased appetite, cognitive impairment, and lack of energy.

Break It: Make a sleep plan. Set a wake time that gives you enough time on your earliest day. Set your bedtime 8.5 hours earlier. Also set a nighttime routine 2 hours before bedtime. The most important habit is to get up every day at your wake time no matter what. Every time you sleep in it’s like giving yourself jet lag. When your nighttime routine time comes around, start following patterns that help your body wind down. Turn off the computer (late night computer use contributes hugely to insomnia), brush your teeth, get things ready for the next day, relax with reading, prayer, stretching, bathing, etc. When you are drowsy or it’s your bedtime, turn out the lights and go to sleep.

Creating healthy habits is the best way to break unhealthy habits. Work on one area at a time, and you’ll experience an amazing transformation in your life.

8 Ways Friends Can Support Your Diet

One common concern I hear about dieting is how to maintain both social relationships and weight when so many social gatherings include food.

Sometimes to obtain weight loss goals, you need to separate yourself from certain people, at least when food is involved.  The conundrum here is that dieting is tough work and a stresssor that requires physical, mental, and emotional energy. In the midst of such an undertaking, you need support more than ever. Often even our biggest cheerleaders are not confident in how to best support us when we travel roads they have not. While it can be difficult to ask for help, both you and your friend will be glad you did.

1. Accountability – Many people have a hard time doing things for themselves alone, but are more likely to follow through if they know someone else cares – or sometimes simply if someone else will know. Friends can join you in your exercise routine or ask you about how you are doing with your meal plan. You are much less likely to hit snooze if you know your friend will be waiting for you to workout at 6am. If you share your journey electronically, make sure you ask friends to specifically comment on your tweets or posts, so you know someone is paying attention and supporting you.

2. Advocacy – Friends can defend your plate when a party host is encouraging another serving or something that is not on your meal plan. A friend can prepare a dish that you know you can eat, so you do not have to only bring your own food. A friend can ask the waiter the ingredients questions that you are tired of asking.

3. Partnership – Beyond accountability, a friend that is journeying with you and experiencing the same ups and downs can commiserate, celebrate, and share ideas with you every step of the way. Often people say that they would like to lose a little to a lot of weight, but they are always waiting for that Monday that never comes. You can ask a friend to join you in dieting or weight loss, and your friend may be excited to have a reason to finally start. If you are using the same diet, then you can take turns preparing meals.

4. Kitchen Clean-Up – If your kitchen or pantry contains items that you have removed from your diet but may be tempting to you, a friend can come over and remove those things, so you aren’t tempted to eat them rather than throw them away.

Fitness is always more fun with a friend

5. Encouragement – Another way to go beyond accountability is to ask a friend to periodically direct words of encouragement to you. Make sure you tell them what is encouraging to you. If you find inspirational quotes to be cheesy, your friend needs to know that.

6. Responsibility – If one of my friends wanted to use walking a dog as motivation and accountability for physical activity, the Big Blue Dog and I would be happy to let my friend walk him every day. If it is easier for you to do things for others, perhaps taking on a physical task for them may be just what you need to take care of yourself. I don’t know many neighbors that would turn down free mowing or raking. Everyone has household tasks that end up on the bottom of their priority list. What things can you do that would help you burn calories and stay busy?

7. Meal Preparation – One major downfall in any healthy eating plan is simply convenience. When it is late or we are busy or tired, taking the top to prepare a healthy meal may just seem like too much. If you often work late on a specific night, ask a good friend if you can join them for dinner that night. Perhaps a friend would be willing to cook and freeze a few meals for you. Just make sure your friend knows what island isn’t on your diet plan.

8. Gardening – If you are living in an apartment or condo, it may be difficult to grow your own fresh produce, and farmers markets aren’t accessible in all areas. However, your friends may have some space where you or they can grow food for one or both of you to eat.

Over The Counter Diet Products

Over The Counter Diet Products

Millions of Americans attempt to lose weight using over the counter (OTC) weight loss aids such as non prescription diet pills or herbal supplements. OTC drugs often make claims such as suppressing appetite or increasing metabolism for their efficacy.

The most prescribed weight loss medications in the US are sympathomimetic appetite suppressants, the most popular being Phentermine. These drugs work by stimulating the hypothalamus gland and affecting certain neurotransmitters to decrease appetite. The hypothalamus is a region of the brain responsible for controlling the autonomic nervous system, regulating sleep cycles, appetite and body temperature.

During the past many decades, a number of over the counter (OTC) diet pills have also been marketed to consumers. Increasingly popular today is the use of ‘herbal’ diet pills and weight loss supplements. Although the FDA regulates how these products can be advertised, as well as how they should be used, many of these products contain ephedra, phenylpropanolamine (PPA) and other potentially harmful substances. Care must be exercised when considering any weight loss product, whether prescription or non prescription.

The FDA has a number of regulations about how diet pills can be advertised, how they can be prescribed, what conditions they can be prescribed for, dosage levels, drug combinations and length of use. When any drug is used contrary to these regulations, the term “off label use” is often applied. Those taking dieting medications should ensure that they are not using these pills in this manner, as this can have profound adverse reactions on health and the body, including blood pressure and metabolism. As well, those considering weight loss medications of any sort should be aware that these products are only designed to be effective when used in conjunction with proper diet and physical activity.

Always remember that just because a diet pill or medication does not require a prescription does not mean that it is safe. As well, the fact that a product is ‘natural’ by no means guarantees that it is safe or effective. Always discuss these products prior to use with a doctor, as many ingredients can negatively interact with other medications and/or health conditions.

How To Experience Visible Effects With A Good Diet Plan

Guaranteed Diet SuccessIt has become a trend to follow diet plans to reduce weight. These plans seem very easy to read or hear but once you start following them, you may notice that sometimes they are really tough. A good diet plan must be designed according to your lifestyle or flavor and all the factors of your body and health must be considered very seriously to give you those visible results.

All your body ailments such as any genetic problem, allergies and some diseases like diabetes and such must be considered when planning a diet for you. If the plan suggests you to eat fresh fruit to satisfy your urge to eating, then it sounds weird to peel off a grapefruit in-between working hours.

If you are asked to cook your meal of pasta without using any fats or carbohydrates, then does not seem very practical. Hence you must not follow any diet plan that asks you to stay hungry or starve your body. There are many plans that suggest you to skip water contents as they claim that increased body weight is the result of excess water in the body.

Find out how a program that has helped countless people lose weight safely and healthily can also help you. Visit the 100 Calorie Diet now.

Good Diet Plan to Lose WeightEvery menu or the meal in your diet plan consists of the counted calories. Every bite you eat is counted for the calories. You must follow the diet chart very carefully so that you do not observe any reverse actions once you are out from the plan. A good diet plan gives the maximum benefits from the food you eat. You must make sure to start your day with a glass of plain water without any fat and flavors. This will flush out all the toxins that accumulate during the night sleep.

You may find it little hard to follow such a routine, but once you become familiar with the process, you are sure to continue it for the better results. Having said so, you should not keep away from your favorite food items. This way, you satisfy your taste buds as well balance your calorie intake. It is always advised to combine at least 30 minutes of workout. It will help you to melt the fats that are settled, but at the same time give you more energy by improving your body metabolism. Ensure that you do not skip any instructions given in a good diet plan. If you are a beginner make sure to consult your doctor before starting off any diet plan for yourself.

One Ah Ha Moment Leads to a New Healthy Lifestyle

Anda T. writes about her weight loss struggles, victories and every day life at www.leavingfatville.com. She also runs www.greatclothingexchange.com in her spare time when not chasing a toddler, cooking, cleaning, working and trying to take over the world.

Most people have an ah-ha moment when they’re ready to lose weight. It can be a small, private moment- something that clicks in their mind and says it’s time to do something. Or it can be something big, something that shocks you into action.

I was not alone with my ah-ha moment. I watched mine on my television, surrounded by friends and family.

We had settled down to watch some movies from my son’s baby days on our big television. Halfway through, my son (in his first walker) careened across the screen. Gleefully shrieking, he got to the front door and stopped. He was grunting for a kick-start and I saw myself cross the screen. My entire backside took up the television. My. Entire. Backside. As I grabbed his walker and brought him back to a clear spot on the movie, I turned and asked my husband what the rasping noise was in the background. He was as gentle as possible, but the sentence struck so completely that I will never forget it. “Honey, that’s you. You’re breathing.”

My world narrowed to pinpricks. That awful sound was me. That was me trying to breathe. All the things that I had attributed to being pregnant or nursing showed themselves for what they really were. The crushing feeling when I laid down, that was my weight, smothering me.

I was fat. I was fat, unhealthy, and I was scared.

I made a promise to myself. It didn’t have a number, or a size. I had only one thing to strive for, one thing to fit in every day. Get healthy.

I started with yoga. Learning to be conscious of my body and learning how to move. I moved on to Cooking Light and calorie counting. Then biking and boot camp, and two years later from that simple mantra, to get healthy, 60 pounds were off my frame for good. I still have that goal, to be healthy, but it isn’t just for me. It belongs to my family now, too. We are healthy.

Best Online Diet Programs – Easy, Reliable And Convenient

Best Online Diet Programs – Easy, Reliable And Convenient

It’s no secret that many people are now turning to the Internet for the best online diet programs – the superhighway of information. However, you must use both of your ‘senses’ and ‘instincts’ when evaluating information on the Net these days. Otherwise, you’ll fall for the scams. When assessing information form the Net, always remember this wisdom: “If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is”.

Despite the scams, there are many good online diet programs. In fact, many of these programs are as effective as the professional diet controllers who may charge you a lot of money for their professional advice or instructions.

Besides inexpensive service, the best online diet programs also offer the following benefits:

1. Convenience. Many of us are very busy these days, we don’t have the time to visit a diet center or read a huge book. Online programs provide easy and convenient tool for dieters to track progress and print out daily food list from the comfort of home.

2. Up-to-date resources available at your fingertips. Good diet programs will provide online support groups, newsletters, menu design and diet tailoring. However, don’t suffer from information overload, stick to one plan and execute one option at a time.

3. Quick and Easy Pre-planned Diet. The best online diet program such as Fat Loss 4 Idiots for instance, gives you pre-planned diet with a schedule that will allow you to eat the right kind of foods at the right time.

4. Start Eating. Yes, start eating! Low carb and low calorie diets don’t work. FatLoss4Idiots gives you 6 meals a day, it’s designed to give your body the amount of calories it needs to maintain an optimum metabolic rate. No need to worry about starving anymore.

Low cost and convenience are the main selling points of online diet programs. There are many great programs available online but none can guarantee success if you don’t follow and stick to the plan. Remember that losing weight requires discipline and persistence, online system can only help to some degree.

One negative point or disadvantage of following a diet program online is that people can just quit the program easily as no one can really know. So there is no peer pressure, you’ll nee

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution: Lessons Learned

After the disappointment in the last episode of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, it was a wonderful surprise to see that the administrator of West Adams High had hopefully found a loophole, so that Jamie and his kids could indeed cook for the entire school, at least as an assembly. The administrator said that the school was based on experiential teaching and preparing kids for college, so healthy eating fit right into their principles. In the mean time, Jamie continued his role of instructor, trying out different subjects beyond culinary arts.

In math class, Jamie taught about calories and consequences by allowing students to choose a snack between soda, chocolate bars, pizza, or oranges. He then allowed them to experience weight gain using weight backpacks. Jamie then took his math students out to the track having the students walk around the track enough times to burn the calories of what they had just eaten.

In social studies class, Jamie brought in adults from the community to share their health stories with the students. By the end of the period, the kids were all in tears and identifying how the stories related to their own families.

Jamie finally took Los Angeles’ Food Revolution into the home to single father’s family. The dad clearly felt guilty about how much fast food he was feeding his two boys, but felt like he did not know how to cook. Jamie explained that parents choose fast food by default because they just don’t yet know what to do. Jamie showed them just how much fast food they were in eating in typical Jamie Oliver style. The better visualization was when Jamie sent dad out to get a normal lunch for his family, while Jamie stayed home to instruct the boys on preparing a meal. In less time than it took dad to drive through and pick up fast food, the boys prepared everything from scratch, including the drink, salad dressing, and a tomato sauce. Dad spent $31, but the meal the boys prepared was only $23. It was clear that Jamie made a real impact on this family.

In the meantime, all permits for filming in any LAUSD school were revoked from the Food Revolution. Although the administrator of West Adams High and MLA fought the decision, Jamie vows to move his kitchen to a building near the school, stating “In my kitchen, it’s a free country.” It’s an interesting statement for a Brit to make in the United States.

Don’t forget to watch Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution on ABC at 9p EST Friday evenings.
